St Matthew Passion – Choral Workshop
Date: 24th February 2018
Venue: Salvation Army Temple, Friars Gate, Exeter
Following their successful ‘Christmas Baroque’ concert, the Exeter Bach Society is now focusing on one of the outstanding works in the repertoire, J S Bach’s St Matthew Passion.
In preparation for their performance, the Society is holding an all-day workshop on Saturday 24 February, and invites all singers to join them. This is an exciting opportunity to learn about this emotionally powerful work from the leading choral director and orchestral conductor, Gavin Carr. Gavin, a popular baritone, is Music Director of the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus, the Bath Minerva Choir, and is Founder-Director of Chorus Angelorum. He is also a guest conductor with the BBC Symphony Chorus and the Philharmonia Chorus. His schedule includes opera and concert performances in Europe and further afield, workshops and masterclasses across the UK, and affiliations with colleges such as Chetham’s School of Music and Bath Spa University.
Jonathan Lucas Wood, the Exeter Bach Society’s Musical Director, will sing some of the tenor parts to enhance the singers’ experience on the day. He has been leading many aspects of student music at the University of Exeter for over six years and is a founding member of the award-winning a capella group ‘Semi-Toned’. Jonathan is also a Tenor Lay Clerk at Buckfast Abbey and Deputy Lay Clerk at Exeter Cathedral. Away from the South West, Jonathan is often engaged with the National Youth Chamber Choir of Great Britain and has recently performed as part of the Fellowship Octet – the pinnacle of the organisation.
The fee is £20 per adult, or £18 if you bring your own score (£10/£8 for those in full-time education). Refreshments will be served all day.
