Much of our lifestyles today are devastating huge parts of the earth and endangering the planet for future generations. Habitats, species, water systems are being lost on every continent; people’s livelihoods are being destroyed and vulnerable communities are dying from Africa to Tibet.
The covenant with Noah in Genesis 9 implies there is a web of life in which all things are connected. We throw away a plastic bag and it ends up choking a turtle. For this reason many Christian traditions even see damage of the environment as a confessable sin. Pollution contaminates the life support systems of the earth and prevents the abundance of life that God declared good in the Genesis story.
As Christians, all our actions are to be shaped by love. Justice for the poor and the care for God’s creation are cornerstones of our Christian faith. If we really want to share the Good News of God, we need to radically change our lifestyles both as churches and as individuals.
