Who we are

The Diocese of Exeter is often described as the Church of England in Devon as the borders of the diocese correspond almost exactly with the county boundaries.

Within the diocese, there are thousands of worshippers participating regularly in all forms of worship in over 600 churches. The Diocese is divided into four archdeaconries.

The work of the church in the Diocese is overseen by the Bishop of Exeter; assisting him are the two 'Suffragan' Bishops, who have special responsibility for the 'Sees' of Crediton and Plymouth respectively.

our abilities and our time,
that we may be worthy stewards of all that you have given.
Save us from complacency
and fear of new ways;
inspire us with vision;
make us a power-house of prayer,
a community of loving service,
and faithful witnesses to your kingdom
as we grow daily in and through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Diocesan staff are based at the Old Deanery, The Cloisters, Exeter. The Bishop is based at the Bishop's Palace in Palace Gate, as is his chaplain and the diocesan director of ordinands.
