Arranging a funeral

Churches are not just there for the happy occasions in life, they are also there to support you when you’re facing more difficult times. Losing a loved one is one of those times, and a Christian funeral provides the opportunity to remember the life of your loved one, and also to say ‘goodbye’. You will also be offered comfort and support from the church minister both before and after the funeral itself. Following a funeral, many churches will also invite you to come to an annual memorial service, which gives you the opportunity to remember your loved one in the stillness and peace of this special church service.

Once you have made arrangements with a funeral director, it is usually about a week until the date of the funeral. In this time the church minister who will be conducting the funeral will come and visit you in your home to discuss the service and to find out about the life of your loved one through your personal reflections and memories.

The funeral service can take place in the parish church, or at a crematorium or burial ground. The exact details will vary from church to church, and will also depend on what you choose to do. You are free to be involved with readings, prayers and eulogies in the service or, if you prefer, you can leave it all in the hands of the church minister.
