Ministry Among Deaf People

Worship, support and fellowship among deaf people in the Exeter Diocese.

The Reverend Catherine Carlyon is responsible for providing pastoral and spiritual care for anyone in the Diocese with a hearing loss, but most particularly to those for whom British Sign Language is their first or preferred language. This includes offering regular opportunities for worship and fellowship in sign language as well as providing assistance with booking interpreters for church services, including baptisms, weddings and funerals.

She holds a level 3 certificate in British Sign Language and is currently studying part time for her interpreting qualification at the University of Central Lancashire.

The role includes much advocacy work to ensure that those who have a hearing loss are able to take as full a part in church life, at all levels, wherever possible. This includes pastoral support, provision of interpreters (where appropriate) and deaf awareness training in the parishes and the Diocese as a whole.

Catherine is also a part-time (2 days per week) assistant priest in the Benefice of Crediton, Shobrooke and Sandford with Upton Hellions, with particularly responsibility for Sandford with Upton Hellions.
