Visiting churches is popular with tourists. Without too much effort, your church can provide a welcome, information on its history and activities for families and children. With a little more effort, you can provide themed activities and events, particularly during the summer when may people visit our wonderful county for a holiday.
There are a couple of good resources available to support your church in developing itself as a tourist attraction.
National Churches Trust run an excellent website, Explore Churches which promotes churches as tourist attractions. Any church can register to be included on the website. At present, only a handful of rural Devon churches are listed. Get yours on there too by downloading their registration form.
Inspired NorthEast is a Heritage Lottery Funded Project which supports church congregations in the North East as they consider or embark upon church development projects. The have a produced an excellent toolkit around encouraging visitors to churches.
Open Welcome is a new resource from Germinate, The Arthur Rank Centre, designed to help churches consider how they might use their building to offer welcome and hospitality to those in their community, both residents and visitors. Download the toolkit for simple, but effective ideas.
