CAPTION: Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey
Shirwell tells the Easter Story
On Palm Sunday people from the parishes of the Shirwell Mission Community in North Devon gathered
Telling the story
at Arlington Court, the local National Trust property, to stage ‘The Easter Experience.’
Churchwarden of St Peter’s, Bratton Fleming, Terry Squire explained: “The drama was led by members of the three Open the Book teams who regularly visit the three primary schools in the Mission Community, assisted by other members of the congregations. Others were on hand to help and to explain what we were doing to visitors to Arlington Court, with the invitation to join us.
“Through drama, prayer and reflections we remembered what Jesus did for us during Holy Week, starting of course with Jesus’ triumphal entry at Jerusalem. Unfortunately the farmer who was bringing a donkey was so busy with lambing, that he was unable to join us, resulting in the cardboard standby being used!”
Other scenes performed were: Judas meeting the Chief Priest, The Upper Room (in Arlington church), Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, outside Pilate’s residence, the Crucification and the Garden Tomb.
Terry added: “Along the journey we stopped to pray and sing hymns. Children were encouraged to take part in the various activities around the grounds, finishing with making Easter Gardens in the churchyard.”
