Becoming a Spiritual Director

We welcome applications from members of any Christian denomination who would like to offer accompaniment to others in their spiritual journey.

We ask that you are willing to follow these guidelines of good practice.

Good Practice in Spiritual Direction

Spiritual directors will have a regular pattern of personal prayer and participation in the wider life of the church. They will be committed to their own spiritual growth and have their own spiritual directors.

Their gifts of accompaniment will have been discerned by others and supported by formation and trainingspecific to this ministry.  They will be reflective in their practice, participating in regular supervision and taking opportunities for continuing development and training.

They will have knowledge of good practice in spiritual direction, particularly in regard to confidentiality, safeguarding issues and maintaining appropriate boundaries.  They will understand the distinction between accompaniment and counselling and be willing to assist people in finding other appropriate help when necessary.  They will review relationships regularly and end them sensitively when appropriate.

In return, we offer:

  • Three study days a year, normally held in Exeter.
  • Advent Quiet Day
  • Local peer supervision groups

A course in Exploring Christian Spirituality and Spiritual Accompaniment runs on a 2 year cycle.
