Invitation to Contribute to Independent Safeguarding Audit of Devon’s Churches and Exeter Cathedral

Posted: 21st May, 2024

People across Devon, including survivors of abuse, are being invited to take part in an independent safeguarding audit of Church of England churches in the county and Exeter Cathedral over the summer.

The audits are taking place across every diocese and cathedral in the Church of England and were commissioned by the Archbishop’s Council.

They are being carried out by the INEQE Safeguarding Group.*

The aim is to make sure dioceses (which oversee safeguarding in parish churches) and cathedrals are doing all they can to create environments where everyone feels safe, valued and respected.

Parishioners, church and cathedral volunteers, staff members, clergy and members of the wider community are being invited to contribute to the audit by completing an online survey:

The INEQE team will also speak with children and vulnerable adults, including victims and survivors of abuse.

The Diocese of Exeter and Exeter Cathedral are encouraging as many people as possible to complete a survey and to be open and honest in their responses. The surveys are anonymous and confidential and all responses will be received by INEQE’s Audit Team, and not by the Church of England, Exeter Cathedral or the Diocese of Exeter.

The surveys are now live and will close at 11:30pm on Tuesday 2 July 2024.

The audits have been commended by the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, IICSA, which recommended that independent external auditing of the Church’s safeguarding practise should continue.

One the audit is complete, INEQE will publish a public report with recommendations for the Diocese of Exeter and the Cathedral.
