Jackie Searle ordained as bishop today
The future Bishop of Crediton was ordained as a bishop today, (Thursday, September 27). The Ven Jackie Searle was episcopally ordained in a service at Southwark Cathedral led by the Archbishop of York, the Most Revd and Rt Hon Dr John Sentamu.
Jackie said: “I have been greatly looking forward to today’s service; I am really excited about all that lies ahead, both today and in my new role as Bishop of Crediton in Exeter Diocese. It is a time to look back and remember God’s faithfulness, and to look forward with hope and joy.
“I am thrilled to be consecrated in Southwark Cathedral with the Archbishop of York presiding, and it will be a great joy to share this very special service with so many others who come to support with their prayers and encouragement.”
The Rt Revd Robert Atwell, Bishop of Exeter, said: “It was a privilege to be there with Jackie and her family as she was ordained in Southwark Cathedral. We are all delighted for her and looking forward enormously to welcoming her formally into the diocese on October 14.
“Jackie brings a wide range of skills and abilities, and I know she will have a really significant contribution to make. There is a great deal for us all to look forward to in this next chapter in the life of our diocese.”
Jackie was among the first women to be ordained as priests when she was a curate in London, and was the first woman to be ordained as a bishop in Southwark Cathedral. She served curacies in Harrow and Ealing, before joining the staff of Trinity College, Bristol where she was Lecturer in Applied Theology.
She moved to be Vicar of Littleover in the Diocese of Derby, serving also as Dean of Women’s Ministry and as Rural Dean. In 2012 she took up her most recent appointment as Archdeacon of Gloucester and Canon Residentiary of Gloucester Cathedral.
Jackie is married to the Revd David Runcorn and they have two grown-up children, Josh and Sim.
Jackie’s welcome service in the diocese will be in Exeter Cathedral at 4pm on Sunday, October 14.
