New archdeacons for Totnes and Barnstaple announced
Revd Douglas Dettmer, who is to be the new Archdeacon of Totnes
The Bishop of Exeter has announced the appointment of two new archdeacons for Totnes and Barnstaple.
The new archdeacon for Totnes will be Revd Douglas Dettmer, currently Rector of the Netherexe parishes and chair of the House of Clergy for the Diocese.
He said: “I look forward so much to working across the very special Archdeaconry of Totnes in all its urban and rural variety, supporting and encouraging its church communities and its ministers ordained and lay. It will be a particular pleasure to build on existing relationships in the archdeaconry and to get to know people and places which are new to me, as well as continuing to engage with the life of the diocese as a whole. After almost a quarter century of ministry in the Diocese of Exeter, I am deeply conscious of how blessed we are in being part of the church in this place, with all its opportunities for proclaiming the gospel and serving the people of this matchless county of Devon.”
The new archdeacon for Barnstaple will be the Revd Dr Mark Butchers, currently vicar of Wolvercote, near Oxford and area dean of the Oxford deanery. He was Rector of North Tawton, Bondleigh and Sampford Courtenay with Honeychurch for seven years up to 1999, before leaving to become Chaplain and Fellow of Keble College, Oxford.
He said: “I’m delighted to have been appointed, and am very much looking forward to coming back to the Diocese.”
Both expect to take up their new appointments in March.
Bishop Robert Atwell said he was very grateful to the tremendous work undertaken by the two acting archdeacons, Clive Cohen and Mike Edson, in the interim.
