New Schools

Following a competitive process, the Diocese of Exeter has been awarded the sponsorship of St James Church of England Primary and Nursery School in Okehampton.

The new school will meet the increased demand for pupil places due to new developments and inward migration.

Opening in 2018, St James Church of England Primary and Nursery School will offer “the best possible education and experiences for every child.”

The school will be highly distinctive, innovative and inclusive and will deliver:

  • An ambitious, creative and challenging curriculum
  • A unique focus on the development of character, self-discipline and resilience through outdoor education and learning
  • A strong focus on environmental responsibility and education
  • A strong Christian ethos in which everything the school does is underpinned by Christian values

Motived by a desire to serve a new, developing community, the school will be open, inclusive, welcoming and nurturing to children and families of all faiths and world views.

The school will make the most of its Dartmoor setting by specialising in outdoor education and learning to develop character and resilience. Alongside the more traditional opportunities in art, drama, science and music, children will benefit from a range of activities not normally available at the primary stage including moor walks, gardening, kite flying, orienteering, willow weaving and pond dipping etc.

The school is now in the pre-opening stage and is consulting on its proposals. Please visit www.dartmooracademy.org to review the plans and to feed in your views.
