The Diocese of Exeter has been named among those shortlisted for the Local and Public Sector Net Zero Transformation category at the 2024 Green Energy Awards, which are hosted by Regen.

This award recognises the crucial role that local public sector leadership can play in transforming the UK’s energy system for a zero-carbon future, through inspiring projects, ambitious leadership and supportive policy frameworks.

The Green Energy Awards run each year, and they are a leading national celebration of pioneering innovation and sustainable development for the UK’s energy system.

This year, more than 100 entries were submitted by companies, communities and individuals across the UK for consideration in six different categories.

The Diocese of Exeter was shortlisted because for working to achieve net zero by 2030 through a series of measures.

These have included decarbonaising buildings, supporting churches and communities to access funding, raising awareness in the local community and taking part in pilot campaigns from The Church of England, including the Give 2 Go Green grant scheme.

One of the steps we’ve been taking to reach Net Zero by 2030 is by subsidising the cost of Church Energy Audits

The Awards ceremony took place at the Bristol Harbour Hotel on the 21 March 2024, and was attended by the Bishop of Plymouth, the Rt. Rev’d James Grier.

The award went to Dorset County Council, who were nominated for their Decarbonisation Programme which focused on public sector buildings, residential properties and commercial units. It has retrofitted over 200 buildings with around 350 measures, provided £6.2million in grants to over 220 organisations and cut an estimated £195,600 from local household bills per year.

Sophie Phillips, who is the Net Zero Carbon Officer for the Diocese of Exeter, said, “We’re delighted to have been shortlisted in the Public and Local Sector Net Zero Transformation category in the Regen Green Energy Awards.

“It’s great to see the commitments by Diocesan Synod and the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, clergy and officers across the diocese have been recognised by the energy sector.

“We want to pass on huge congratulations to the very deserving winners, Dorset County Council and their fantastic Building Decarbonisation Programme.”
