Deputy Chair of the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC)

Closing date for applications: 30th November 2023

We are seeking a Deputy Chair to join the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC).

The DAC offers practical advice, support, and guidance relating to the effective management, conservation, and sustainability of the 600 churches in the diocese, the majority of which are grade I or grade II* listed. It advises the Diocesan Chancellor on faculty petitions relating to schemes involving conservation works and alterations to church buildings and works to churchyards. The Committee also promotes and encourages missional and community-focused approaches, conservation best practice and creativity, to help individual congregations and communities to adapt and utilise their churches for today’s needs.

The DAC is appointed by the bishop and is made up of the four archdeacons, two Synod nominees and other members with specific areas of professional expertise and interests, relating to the conservation of our historic buildings and churchyards. This work is supported by the two members of the Church Buildings team. We are seeking an individual who is a skilled communicator with enthusiasm for the mission of the Church and a specialist interest in historic buildings and conservation, and who has a pragmatic approach to the challenges faced by those caring for churches and churchyards.

This is a voluntary position for which travel and other appropriate expenses are offered. The Deputy DAC Chair would be expected to attend in person the six meetings a year at the Old Deanery, Exeter and to chair these if the DAC Chair is unavailable. The role will also involve taking part in occasional DAC site visits around the diocese during normal working hours and contributing to casework via email. It is expected that a minimum time commitment of 10 hours per month, on average, will be required to fulfil this role effectively.

To discuss this role further, please contact Dr Nigel Pratt, Senior Church Buildings Advisor and DAC Secretary: nigel.pratt@exeter.anglican.org / 01392 294944.
