Northam is a small but growing town on the outskirts of Bideford in North Devon, overlooking the Taw/Torridge estuary, Northam Burrows and Westward Ho! beach.
St Margaret’s Church is in the centre of Northam and dates back to the 13th Century with considerable restoration in the 1800’s, when the organ was installed.
Northam is in the Exeter Diocese and part of the Torridge Coastal Mission Community.
Before Covid-19 there were five Sunday services each month, one 8 am BCP said Holy Communion, and four with music, (two Holy Communion and two Morning Worship). There are also occasional special services, such as Nine Lessons and Carols. It is hoped to return to this pattern again in the future, but regardless, music will be required at services and will play a very important part in the life of St Margaret’s Church as before.
There are 51 members on the Church Electoral Roll and the regular congregation is around 40, increasing to over 150 for the main Christian festivals.
There is a small but enthusiastic robed choir, who accompany the four services. The choir leads the congregation and sings an anthem/hymn during the taking of communion, but with greater contributions for special services. The choir currently practises once a week. Developing the choir would be one of the tasks for the choir director.
St Margaret’s is fortunate in having an excellent organ, a very fine historic JW Walker two manual instrument with a good specification. There is also a good quality electric piano.
The organist is expected to play for the four main Sunday services per month, and for special services agreed in advance, although a relief arrangement can be made. Weddings and funerals are by special arrangement.
An enhanced DBS check will be necessary upon appointment.
Remuneration is based on RSCM recommendations.
