PRIEST IN CHARGE

for the

Benefices of Ashwater and Black Torrington, in the Holsworthy Mission Community

Do you have a heart for rural ministry? If so, read on. We are looking for an energetic and visionary priest, who is enthusiastic about working with us in this exciting new role, helping to guide our two benefices as we move through a period of significant change. Could that be you?

Ashwater and Black Torrington are two adjoining benefices, with nine parishes, situated in north-west Devon. This is a beautiful area, between Dartmoor and the north Cornwall coast, where farming and tourism are the main sources of economic activity. We are a forward-looking group of churches, in the process of shaping our Mission Community as part of the ‘Growing the Rural Church’ initiative. We are committed to our work with children and young families – we have good contacts with our local schools, a thriving Saturday Church, and an ecumenical Youth Worker. We are also exploring the appointment of a Families and Children’s Worker.

We are seeking to appoint a Priest who:

  • is passionate about the challenges and opportunities associated with rural life and rural communities;
  • is committed to whole church ministry, developing our lay teams and valuing the gifts of others;
  • is imaginative and willing to explore new forms of worship and outreach, while being sensitive to the traditions of our parishes.

In return, we offer enthusiastic lay teams, including two Readers, able to provide support in all areas of ministry; a beautiful area in which to live and work; and welcoming communities, offering ‘proper’ Devon hospitality.
