The new Bishop of Plymouth is planning to start his episcopal ministry with a six day prayer pilgrimage from Exeter to Plymouth.

The Rev’d Prebendary James Grier is due to be ordained as a bishop at Westminster Abbey on 29 September.

“I want to hear their stories and those of their communities; to discover their hopes and fears for their churches and to pray with and for them.” Bishop of Plymouth-elect, James Grier

His “Going in Prayer” pilgrimage will begin at Exeter Cathedral on Sunday 2 October.

The Going in Prayer walk is being supported by Devon Pilgrim

Walking Route

His walking route will take him to towns and villages including Chudleigh, Ashburton, Buckfastleigh, Totnes, Ermington, Ivybridge, Noss Mayo and Wembury.

He will visit a number of churches and schools along the way and is inviting people to walk parts of the route with him.

James said “I want to begin my time as a new bishop in prayer and so I am embarking on a pilgrimage from Exeter to Plymouth.

“I will be walking over 6 days and look forward to meeting people from across the area.

“I want to hear their stories and those of their communities; to discover their hopes and fears for their churches and to pray with and for them.

Stories of Communities

“I will be stopping to pray at various churches and would love to invite people to join me to pray with me at those stops or walk with me for the section that is in their Mission Community.”

James’ walk is being supported by Devon Pilgrim, a Diocese of Exeter project, which includes four pilgrimage routes linking a number of Devon’s churches and Holy places.

James plans to arrive in Plymouth on Friday 7 October.

He will then travel back to Exeter for a welcome service at Exeter Cathedral on Sunday 9 October.
