New Devon Pilgrim Route Through Teign Valley Celebrates Creation
A new pilgrimage route through Devon’s Teign Valley has been launched with a weekend of walks.
The Eden Way is based on the creation story and has been devised by the churches of the Teign Valley, supported by the Diocese of Exeter’s Devon Pilgrim project.
The 18-mile circular route is designed to be walked over two days and the route guide suggests a number of churches, pubs and cafes to visit along the way, as well as local accommodation.
Walkers are invited to pause at each church on the way to read a reflection on the creation story.
“It is an ideal place for a pilgrimage to explore and celebrate the abundance of God’s creation in the context of the ambiguities and challenges of the 21st century.”
These have been written by the Rev’d Ruth Frampton, Rector of the Teign Valley and Haldon Hill Mission Community.
She took part in the launch events over 6 and 7 August and said “The Eden Way offers an opportunity to walk mindfully through the beauty of God’s creation in the Teign Valley.
“Come and experience the contrasts: wild and cultivated, bleak and densely foliaged, craggy quarries and gentle fields grazed by sheep and cattle, in an environment very conscious of the climate emergency.
“It is an ideal place for a pilgrimage to explore and celebrate the abundance of God’s creation in the context of the ambiguities and challenges of the 21st century.
“Our six churches offer quiet space for meditation and reflection, rest and refreshment. Walk for fun or come and be a pilgrim!”
The route takes in the villages of Dunsford, Bridford, Christow, Ashton, Doddiscombsleigh and Dunsford.
It is the fifth new pilgrimage route in Devon to be supported by Devon Pilgrim since the project was launched in 2021.
Jonathan Yandall, Project Support Officer for Growing the Rural Church, which runs Devon Pilgrim, said “It is great to see the creativity and hard work which has gone into developing the Eden Way.
“I have walked the route twice now and it is a great chance to retreat from daily routines and reflect on the creation story in a valley which is one of Devon’s hidden gems.”
