Bishop of Exeter appoints new chaplain
The Bishop of Exeter has announced that the Reverend Nigel Mason has been appointed as his new chaplain.
Nigel is currently an Associate Priest in the White Cross Mission Community in Exeter.
He was previously Chaplain to Hospicare Exeter.
Nigel said: “After 23 years in the Church of England I have huge respect for the episcopal order.
“I am looking forward to working with Bishop Robert and his staff and with colleagues in the Diocese of Exeter towards our vision to grow in prayer, make new disciples and serve the people of Devon with joy.”
Nigel was ordained more than 20 years ago and was a Vicar in Brighton as well as two parishes in Birmingham, where he was the bishop’s Funeral Advisor.
Former primary school teacher
Before becoming a priest Nigel was a primary school teacher in London and a Law Reporter (non-practising barrister) in the Royal Courts of Justice.
He has also worked in front of house at the Old Vic theatre in London, as a buyer for Waterstones books and a researcher at the British Museum.
In his spare time Nigel enjoys cycling and walking, including a charity trek of part of the Great Wall of China.
He also enjoys films, reading and says he is a “great supporter” of a healthy work/life balance.
“With my experience of working in parishes, in hospices and in the Court of Appeal, I feel prepared to work under pressure and to enjoy the challenge as well.”
Nigel officially takes up his new role on 4 May but, due to the current coronavirus lockdown, he will be continuing his work with the White Cross Mission Community until the new priest-in-charge there is able to move to Devon.
