Devon Church Launches Voices of Woolsery Digital History Trail
An historic church in North Devon has created a new interactive trail for visitors which will tell the history of the church and surrounding area.
The InfoPoint includes a digital trail of All Hallows Church in Woolsery, including surprise puzzles and quizzes, funded with a heritage lottery grant.
Visitors are able to access the audio and visual archive by scanning a QR code on the InfoPoint to find out about the history of the church and local area over the centuries and up to the present day.
Voices of Woolsery was launched on Saturday 14 September, as part of the Devon Historic Churches Trust ‘Ride and Stride’ fundraising event, which encourages people to visit one of Devon’s 600 churches on foot or on two wheels.
The project also includes ‘Voices of Woolsery’, sharing recorded stories and memories from people living in the village. More will be added to the archive over time.
The vicar, the Rev’d Jane Skinner said: “We see the potential for the church to be a treasure that is opened up for the village and visitors to experience, discover and enjoy.
“With InfoPoint we become the archive for the village, recording significant memories and information that may otherwise be lost. And all narrated by the people involved in this local history – telling their own stories.
“It’s a gift to be able to capture events, achievements and stories into the future.
“We hope that this will help journeys of faith to continue in All Hallows and be an inspiration for spiritual exploration, including meeting Jesus who is portrayed in the only stained-glass window at the East end of the church.”
The launch event at All Hallows on Saturday also included the chance to climb the church tower and a Teddy Parachute Drop, crafts and refreshments.
