CAPTION: Mary's Meals now feeds over two million children a day in 19 countries across the world
Devon Churches Helping Feed Children Through Mary’s Meals This Christmas
This Christmas, churches and organisations around Devon have been raising money for the Christian international food charity Mary’s Meals.
Mary’s Meals, named after Mary the mother of Jesus, is a global charity which provides children in some of the world’s poorest countries with a daily meal at their place of education.
In Newton Ferrers, a member of Holy Cross Church has made beautiful Lavender Stuffed Chickens with fabric from Malawi to be sold as gifts to fundraise for the charity.

A new Mary’s Meals Volunteer Group has been set up in South Devon, ready to plan some exciting events for 2022 – (if you would like to join or find out more, please contact katie.harding@marysmeals.org).
Mary’s Meals has also visited St Mellitus College South West (Plymouth) to talk to their ordinands-in-training about working with volunteers and social action projects.
Mill House Retreat Centre continues to support Mary’s Meals by sponsoring the provision of meals for a school in Malawi.
Katie Harding, who lives and worships in Plymouth, is a Supporter Engagement Officer for Mary’s Meals. She said that Mill House’s support feeds 343 children every day and that the charity as a whole now feeds over two million children a day in 19 countries across the world.
Mary’s Meals works in countries like Malawi, Liberia, South Sudan, Syria and Lebanon, with the prospect of a meal encouraging children to come to school and receive an education which could help lift them and their community out of poverty.
Katie said, “Many children in the developing world don’t go to school because they have to work to find food.
“By giving these vulnerable children a daily meal, we are helping break the cycle of poverty and giving them hope.”
Katie said the charity is offering supporters a free Nativity kit, gifted by bestselling author Frank Cottrell-Boyce and his wife Denise, complete with two rhyming scripts suitable for young and older children.
She has also said that this winter, all donations to Mary’s Meals from November ’21 to January ’22 would be doubled by a group of generous supporters, meaning that £15.90 would pay for two children to have school meals every day for a year.
Through the last year, despite the pandemic, it has been able to expand its feeding programmes and continue to feed children who for periods were not able to attend school.
