Exeter’s General Synod Representatives Ensure Devon’s Voice is Heard
The General Synod representatives from the Diocese of Exeter played a key role in this year’s February group of General Synod sessions at Church House in London.
The Archdeacon of Totnes, the Ven. Douglas Dettmer, who is a member of the House of Clergy, chaired two debates after being accepted onto the list of approved chairs last year.
Rev’d Prebendary Rosie Austin, Team Rector of the Shirwell Mission Community and a member of the House of Clergy, spoke in the Land and Nature debate.
Rev’d Professor Morwenna Ludlow, Canon Theologian at Exeter Cathedral and also a member of the House of Clergy, spoke on the motion about the War in Ukraine and the Challenge to International Order.
Luke Appleton, a member of the House of Laity from Paignton parish church, spoke in several debates, including the discussion on the Living in Love and Faith (LLF) process.
Simon Friend, another member of the House of Laity, from Tiverton, also contributed to the LLF discussion, as did Rev’d Karl Freeman, a member of the House of Clergy and fellow member Rev’d Graham Hamilton, vicar of PPT church in Bovey Tracey.
Carys Puleston, a member of the House of Laity who is training for ordination, spoke in the final General Synod session on Removal of Divorce as an Impediment to Ordination.
The Acting Bishop of Exeter, the Rt. Rev’d Jackie Searle, was also at the synod and said “General Synod is a place where many different views and perspectives are heard, on a vast range or issues and church legislation. It can be intense, but a privilege to be part of discernment and decision making.”
The next meeting of the General Synod will be from 5-9 July in York.
