New Modern Slavery Advisor for Diocese of Exeter
The Diocese of Exeter has a new modern slavery and anti exploitation advisor. Rev’d Edwina Fennemore recently moved to Devon after spending the last seven years working across Hampshire as Anti-Slavery Lead for the Diocese of Portsmouth and then additionally, Winchester Diocese from 2020.
Edwina works nationally alongside the Clewer Initiative, which is the Church of England’s project to combat modern slavery. She also works locally with the Devon and Torbay Anti-Slavery Partnership and will liaise with the Diocese Safeguarding team. Her role in the Diocese of Exeter is a voluntary one.
Chris Forster, the former Lead Officer for Transforming Plymouth Together, was the previous diocese advisor on modern slavery.
Edwina said: “Partnership is key to this work, and as such, after listening people in parishes, I hope we will find common ground supporting the most vulnerable in our communities from a prayerful base.
“Our shared mission will involve witnessing to God’s love and justice, as we continue to expose this often hidden crime through greater awareness and understanding of the signs, and importantly, where to report concerns.
“Individually and collectively, we can support change in our local communities and have a positive impact for our global brothers and sisters.”
This year’s Anti-Slavery Day is 18 October but the campaign runs throughout this year and next.
Edwina said “The 2022-2023 campaign invites us to ‘Make it Slavery Free’ through a pledge in our homes, churches, businesses and communities.
“I look forward to getting to know people across Devon and familiarising myself across the different communities within this county by meeting with churches where they are.
