New Year Honour for Torbay’s Rev’d Nathan Kiyaga
A vicar from Devon has been made a medallist of the Order of the British Empire in the 2023 New Year’s Honours for services to the community in Devon and Cornwall.
Rev’d Nathan Kiyaga is Torbay Area Dean and Chaplain to St Cuthbert Mayne Church of England and Roman Catholic Secondary School.
He is also Chair of the Devon and Cornwall Community Scrutiny Panel, which works with Devon and Cornwall Police to build trust and confidence between the police and the community.

Rev’d Kiyaga thanked his wife and family for their support
Nathan, who is from Uganda, said “I am grateful that I have been named as part of King Charles III’s honour list for this year as a British Empire Medallist. I am immensely grateful to all those who nominated me.
“I give thanks to my wife Brigit Kiyaga for the ongoing support and partnership in raising our children and serving this community.”
“To the many colleagues at St Cuthbert Mayne School, Torbay Place Leadership Board, The Voluntary Sector, Private Sector, Torbay Council Team, The different coalitions of influence and Brothers and Sisters in the faith community in Torbay.
“Also, the incredible team at Devon and Cornwall Community Panel, Devon and Cornwall police strategic partners for the panel, the Police and Crime Commissioner, the Bishops in Exeter Diocese and Archdeacon of Totnes, to mention but a few, thank you for the collaboration, wisdom and the drive towards making habitable circles of love for all to flourish and blossom.
“Let us keep running this race until heaven and earth are one.”

As well as his work in Devon, Nathan also served as a musician at the 2022 Lambeth Conference.
The Bishop of Plymouth, the Rt. Rev’d James Grier, said “I am delighted that Nathan is being recognised and honoured for his immense contributions to the community of Torbay.
“I recently attended the Mayor’s Carol Service, Nathan was one of the driving forces behind this event and everyone I spoke to commented on all that he does in and for Torbay. Well done and thank you, Nathan!”
The British Empire Medal (BEM) was reintroduced by the Government in 2011 to honour local volunteers who make a difference to their communities.
It is awarded on behalf of the King by the Lord Lieutenant of the relevant county or local authority.
Recipients are also traditionally invited to a royal garden party.
