Posted: 6th March, 2019

The Right Rev’d Robert Atwell, Bishop of Exeter, joined staff, children and guests for a special day of celebration, 50 years to the day since the then Bishop of Exeter, confusingly also called Bishop Robert, opened Pilton Bluecoat school to the children from three local schools which had closed (Pilton Church School, Bluecoat Boys school and the Girls National school).

John Searson, the diocese’s Director of Education, who also attended the event, said: “I was delighted to attend the school’s celebrations arranged to mark this special occasion. Pilton Bluecoat Academy has a long and proud history of serving local families and children effectively. The children were a credit to the school being excellent ambassadors for the school’s Christian ethos and values. I thank the staff and governors for my invitation and wish the school continued success during the next 50 years!”

Ian Thomas, Head of Pilton Bluecoat Academy, said: “I am very proud to be part of Pilton Bluecoat Academy, The re-enacted walk from the three old Barnstaple schools back in January together with this celebration with the Bishop of Exeter has given the children the opportunity to learn more about the school and Pilton’s rich history. It was wonderful to meet so many people and hear the personal stories and memories from ex teachers and pupils. Pilton Bluecoat Academy continues to have a special place in the hearts of so many local people.”

Rhian Nicholas, CEO TEAM Academy Trust, said: “It has been a real privilege to be a part of Pilton Bluecoat Academy’s anniversary celebrations.  Former headteachers, teachers and pupils have travelled afar to be part of this occasion and it has been an excellent opportunity to share happy memories.  The school has touched the hearts and minds of thousands of children over the last 50 years.”

The day started with a celebration assembly led by Head Ian Thomas and Bishop Robert. In the afternoon friends of the school, ex pupils and the local community enjoyed looking at old photographs and listening to the school choir over tea and cakes. At the end of the day each child received a commemorative mug.
