Praying for an End to Violence and Suffering in Gaza and Israel
A statement from the Acting Bishop of Exeter, the Rt. Rev’d Jackie Searle, about the Middle East:
It is just a week ago that news began to break of a huge breach of Israeli defences by Hamas, the terrorist organisation based in Gaza.
The violence since then has been brutal and shocking. Our Archbishops have called for prayer, and for restraint on all sides.
Those of us who were on pilgrimage to the Holy Land last January met the Anglican Archbishop of Jerusalem, Hosam Naoum, who this week, with other Christian leaders in Jerusalem, said: ‘We extend our hands to all those who suffer and we pray that the Almighty may grant comfort to the afflicted, and wisdom to those in positions of authority…
“We implore all to work tirelessly towards an end to violence and the establishment of a just and lasting peace.”
I echo these statements, condemning the violence, and calling for prayer and for restraint. This part of the world, where Jesus lived and walked, is still so terribly troubled. I invite you to join our Archbishops in prayer for all who are suffering in Israel and Gaza, for an end to the violence, and for a just and lasting peace.
Almighty God, we pray for the many people whose lives have been torn apart by conflict in Israel and Gaza. We remember especially those who have died, those who are grieving, the injured or captured, those now without food, shelter, or medical supplies. We pray also for those who have the power to bring peace, for your spirit of truth, reconciliation, compassion and justice. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
