Nominate Someone Making a Difference for the St Boniface Awards 2025

Posted: 30th January, 2025

There are some new categories for this year’s St Boniface Awards, which honour lay people in the Diocese of Exeter who have made an outstanding contribution to life in Devon.

It’s the Bishop of Exeter, the Rt. Rev’d Dr Mike Harrison’s first year overseeing the awards, which celebrate the work of lay people in their churches, church schools or local community.

Successful nominees will become Companions of St Boniface.

Bishop Mike has chosen some new criteria for people to be nominated for. These include: fruitfulness in mission and evangelism, effective engagement with children and young people and improving life for others by bringing communities together.

Bishop Mike said, “There is some fantastic work happening across Devon whether in service of improving the life of others, work among children and young people or in mission and evangelism. The St Boniface awards are an opportunity to mark and celebrate that work and to thank those who are making such an important contribution in one or more of these areas.”

The awards are now in their fifth year and the window to become a Companion of the Order of St Boniface is open from now until 7 March 2025.

A celebration service, which is a highlight of the diocese calendar, will be held at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday 7 June at 4pm to admit new members to the Company of St Boniface.

The awards are open to lay people who are worshipping members of an Anglican church in the Diocese of Exeter, but not diocesan employees. They are also open to staff, volunteers and governors of Church of England schools in the Diocese.

Karly Jackson-Wells was given a St Boniface Award for setting up the Delta Youth Cafe for youth and young people in Ilfracombe.

We would love to see more nominations for young people aged between 11-18 this year. If you know of a young person who has been making a difference in their school, church or local community, please do consider them when making a nomination. Successful nominees will be notified by the end of March.

Rev’d Jeremy Putnam, Diocesan Mission Enabler, said “It is so often the case that when we thank people in this way, we are also acknowledging and celebrating the great work and presence of the Holy Spirit. I am so pleased to see the St Boniface awards recognise fruitful ministry in areas of evangelism and mission, and the work of supporting children, their families, and communities with faith. It goes to emphasise the many great examples around the diocese, where people have responded faithfully to what the Spirit has started.”
