Stuffed With Courage! Teddies Take a Leap of Faith

Congregation & cuddlies
Last Sunday, St Michael’s Church in Ilsington hosted its third annual Teddy Tower Day, and it was a towering triumph! Families gathered for a joyful Family Service themed ‘The Lord’s name is a strong tower’ (Proverbs 18:10), before sending their cuddly companions on a thrilling zip wire ride from the top of the church tower. Despite stormy forecasts (and a backup plan to launch the teddies from the organ loft!), the weather held just long enough for the bears to make their brave descent.

Among the congregation were Jen and Tim, marking their first wedding anniversary – they tied the knot at St Michael’s just a year ago. This time, they were joined by Sky the bunny, who made the trip up (and down!) the tower.
We also had the pleasure of meeting Linda Carew and Teddy, her incredible 76-year-old bear, won at a fair at Twickenham Rugby Club. While Teddy didn’t brave the zip wire (he’s earned a well-deserved rest!), he was proudly in attendance as a vintage VIP.

Up on the roof, churchwarden Peter Dickinson and his wife Gaye formed part of the fearless launch team, coordinating each bear’s flight with helpers on the ground. “It was lovely to see the bears flying down the wire,” said Gaye. “Everyone was really excited, despite the rain!”

Safe landing
Reverend Canon John Bennett shared, “Today’s Teddy Tower Family Service has become a bit of a legend. It’s our third year doing it. During the service, everyone prepares their teddies with name tags and safety harnesses, and after the service, they’re taken up the tower for a ride down the zip line – it’s great fun! The theme, ‘The Lord’s name is a strong tower’ reminds us that the name of Jesus is our strength and salvation.”
