St Boniface Awards 2022

The Bishop of Exeter has established the Company of St Boniface as a way of honouring lay people who have made an outstanding contribution to the life of the Church in Devon in their local community, or who have built up our diocesan overseas links in our witness to Christ.

Nominations Panel

Nominations will be reviewed by a panel comprising the Bishops of Exeter, Crediton and Plymouth with the Chair of the House of Laity of the Diocesan Synod.  The panel will consult the relevant archdeacon, Rural Dean or Lay Chair prior to making their decision. Successful nominees will be notified by the end of April 2022.

Criteria for nomination as a Companion of St Boniface include:

  • making a significant difference in their church community or field of ‘ministry’
  • serving the wider community with joy
  • long-term voluntary service within the church
  • innovation and entrepreneurship
  • improving life for people less able to help themselves
  • displaying moral courage and vision in making and delivering tough choices
  • making a valuable contribution to the care of creation and/or addressing climate change

The awards are open to lay people who are worshipping members of an Anglican church in the Diocese of Exeter. They are also open to staff, volunteers and governors of Church of England schools in the Diocese. This year we are introducing a new category for young people aged 11-18!

Who may make a nomination?

Any practising member of the Church of England in Devon may make a nomination on the form provided. Please note that the form must be submitted in this original format by email and sent to

A celebration service to admit new members to the Company is held each summer, as close as may be convenient to the feast day of St Boniface. The service of admission is normally held in the Cathedral (Covid restrictions depending).
